The Total Leader® Newsletter - September 2022
Leading in the post-summer season - the most productive time of your year?
Leadership makes all the difference
As we head into Autumn after what has been anything but an as-per-usual summer, the leadership challenge is stark.
Record temperatures have brought the environmental situation to the fore. Inflation and, in particular energy costs, loom large against a backdrop of industrial action and the uncertainty of the impact the new Prime Minister will bring.
The past few years have highlighted one reality that we believe to our core -
Leadership makes all the difference.
Leading ourselves. Leading our teams. Leading our organisations.
The challenge of leadership is to face current realities, of course, and to make sensible plans, with contingencies where necessary. It is, however, to create a positive sense of direction and purpose that stimulates the passion and best efforts of firstly yourself and, by example, those you lead and influence.
We wish you a fantastic September and hope you enjoy this the first in this new series of LMI UK newsletters.
The power of goal setting
In abnormal times, as well as when we return from holiday or have experienced some other disruption to normal routine, it can be easy to lose sight of fundamental pracitces that have served us well over many years. The use of effective, continuous and meaningful goals is one such discipline.
Success is goal-direction action. In other words if, on a daily basis, you have worthwhile goals and you are making progress towards them, you are successful!

Ultimately, it is about nurturing the talent within and giving individuals the additional skills and support needed to see them progress in their careers, whilst overcoming any self-limiting obstacles that are currently standing in their way.

Headline Article : Post-Summer Productivity
As summer draws to a close and schools reopen, there will be many of us returning to work feeling refreshed and motivated after some much-needed rest and relaxation.
Even for those who haven’t been away, summer can often have a different ‘feel’ and September brings a ‘back to work’, New Year-like energy.
Equally, for some it may have been a less-than-idyllic summer and, especially given the overriding news narrative at the moment, the autumn may be faced with a sense of dread and despondency.
Either way, the key to starting well and maintaining momentum through this crucial time of the year is productivity.
What do we mean by productivity?
Everyone yearns to succeed; to feel that their efforts are valuable in achieving some worthwhile purpose. When we can see that we are investing our time, energy and resources in ways that are producing results in line with the success that we desire, that is productivity.

The Leadership Forum - 7 fortnightly IN-PERSON sessions. West Midlands
LMI UK Director Mark Tonks will lead a small group of business managers and leaders coming together to explore their own personal productivity, and the productivity of their people. With the state of the nation being somewhat challenging and with costs rising almost daily, one of the only true solutions is to increase the productivity of people throughout an organisation. If one of the single biggest recurring expenses in a business is it’s people, then any improvement in their productivity will have a direct impact on the bottom line profitability of that business. The Leadership Forum is designed to deliver exactly that.
Contact Mark Tonks for more information.
